May 12 - Proverbs 12

Verse 18 is the one I want to claim from chapter 12 for today ...

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."
I suspect we all know that piercing.  We have all experienced unkind, sometimes cruel things said to us.  We have all experienced being the one to say careless, thoughtless things to another - usually someone in our own family.  It is like a sword.  And while we will cry out against physical violence, we participate in wounding others by our words.  You know the hardest part?  Often the wounds are inflicted on our own children. They are the primary recipients of our reckless and careless words - as we may have been a recipient as children ourselves.  The New Revised Standard Version translates this:  "rash words are like sword thrusts ..."
Reckless, rash, careless words ... same as piercing someone with a sword.

"But the tongue of the wise brings healing".
That's the good news.  There can be healing.  And it can be facilitated by wise, thoughtful, careful words.  Do you need to pass on a healing touch to someone today?  Do you need to hear the words of Jesus to bring healing to your own spirit?  Pray for wisdom ... speak well ... listen well!

Lord, give us wisdom as we are in conversations today.  Give us wisdom as we talk to little children and to spouses.  May the words of our mouths as well as the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to You this day.
